- Abstract
- Commissioned to prepare a landscape strategy for 20 km of the Upper Lee Valley in East London, Witherford Watson Mann Architects chose to proceed from the part to the whole. They developed a simple bird’s-eye projection, which was used to develop project proposals for small parts of the valley, subsequently discussed and refined by the stakeholders. The parts were assembled into an overview, and painted as a tall scroll; underlying thematic threads were drawn out and emblematically represented. Understanding and representing the interdependence of the parts helped develop multifunctional landscape projects. Although conceived as multiple projects of acupuncture, the strategy led to the realisation of one larger project. The 200-hectare Walthamstow Wetlands is a nature reserve on a regional scale, and was delivered seven years later using a number of elements first identified in the strategy.
