- Redrawing the MapOscillating between Resemblance and Alienation
- Abstract
- Referring to his 1981 graduation project, Frits Palmboom investigates how the process of redrawing the map helps to leap from analysis to design. The play with figurative and literal meanings, positive and negative rendering, with colour, scale, visual rhyme and contrast acts as a catalyst for design ideas. The roll of sketching paper helps to stay close to the surface, while at the same time subtly getting away from it: to shuttle between resemblance and alienation. The ambiguity of the drawing makes it possible to develop parallel lanes of thought, which feed creativity in the design process. Keys are ‘the creative mistake’ and ‘forgetting the legend’.
