- Abstract
- Architecture is about a process of making buildings, as well as about a built environment in which human activity and use transform this environment. It is about material facts, and about memories, about dreams and ideals. Architectural design cannot address these aspects. Memories cannot be designed, and dreams cannot be captured. But what is possible, argues architect Mary Duggan, is to design an ‘experience of time’. In the design process, the model is a useful tool for this. Its scale and materiality create a physical relationship with the model, in which the various human senses are addressed. The model simultaneously represents the technical aspects as well as addresses the domain of poetry and politics.
