- On Marketplaces and an Architecture of the Common
- Abstract
- Small rural towns are an essential part of Irish society. These towns often evolved around marketplaces, which had a central function in the life of rural communities. Today, these market squares have lost their function, as large supermarkets on the edge of towns have taken over as the main places for commerce, shopping and gathering. Jeffrey Bolhuis and
Tara Kennedy reflect in this article on the project ‘Free Market’, which they developed together with other architects for the National Irish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2018. This project explored how marketplaces can be revitalised.
