- Abstract
- This article examines experiences of seclusion, intimacy and visibility and their significance for the architecture of the public domain. Starting from two ‘performances’ – one in the setting of a classical stage set, the other in a museum context – architects Ard de Vries and Donna van Milligen Bielke identify the essential factors that create a ‘space of appearance’. The design for the Kunstwerf, a complex of buildings for the performing arts in Groningen, is then read as an example of the way in which the arrangement of the space and the dimensioning of transitions or thresholds contribute to the meaning of the new public domain between the buildings.
