- Longing for Brick
- Abstract
- BLAF-architecten is a small architecture practice that has realised a series of small, remarkably experimental houses within the monotonous sprawl of Flanders. Lieven Nijs and Maarten Van Den Driessche argue that these houses do not aim to answer to a particular regionalism, but are a consequence of recent European regulations for energy use. BLAF is involved in the local brick industry and develops proposals in which structure and appearance – the brick façade – are closely related. In this article, the work of BLAF is examined against a precise selection of smallscale houses designed by other Flemish architecture firms. In doing so, the text questions a one-dimensional regionalist interpretation of Flanders’ contemporary architecture scene.
