- Constructing the SiteThe Ticino and Critical Regionalism (1978-1987)
- Abstract
- This paper considers Ticinese architecture’s alignment to the theoretical construct of Critical Regionalism proposed by Kenneth Frampton in the early 1980s. It argues that Frampton’s
top-down reading became instrumental for subjects of his inquiry. On the one hand, Frampton’s evaluation of Ticinese architecture in general, and Botta’s in particular, as illustrations of Critical Regionalism, overlooked the intricacies, inner contradictions and historical limitations of the production. On the other hand, the unwittingly interventionist character of his theoretical appraisal coloured the subsequent exchanges between this peripheral architecture and the nominal centres of professional discourse.
