Simon Critchley – Continuity or Crisis? Aldo Rossi versus Reyner Banham In 1959, Reyner Banham published in the Architectural Review an unrestrained attack on contemporary Italian architecture titled ‘Neoliberty; The Italian Retreat from Modern Architecture’. This article was a provocative reaction to a text by Aldo Rossi and would set the tone for a
longer and more implicit discussion on the role of continuity in architectural culture. Simon Critchley illustrates that this polemic did not remain limited to the realm of words, but soon became a discussion of projects in which designs by Rossi were so to speak confronted with buildings and proposals that were championed by Banham.
