- FRAC Centre, Plateau of Architectural Experimentation: A FRAC is not an Architecture Museum
- Abstract
- The FRAC Centre was founded in 1983, along with 22 similar Regional Funds for Contemporary Art, in the context of the decentralisation policy initiated by the socialist government, and led by Jack Lang, François Mitterrand’s Minister of Culture. This process of decentralisation endowed local authorities with executive powers in urban and land planning, housing and health care. If Mitterrand proclaimed culture as a central axis of his policy, Jack Lang’s approach widened the understanding of culture to encompass the notions of innovation and diversity with the idea of culture as a vector for territorial development and social cohesion. This essay builds on the testimonies of major actors of this institutional and intellectual adventure (curators, participating architects) to contextualise the emergence of a platform and its progressive institutionalisation into a museum.
