        • Collection Building: Making Architecture Public in the Art Market

        Abstract
        In May 1984, Joseph Giovannini wrote an article for The New York Times, titled ‘Museums make Room for the Art of Architecture’, elaborating on the architectural drawing market as a strong catalyst behind the phenomenon of architecture museums. Not only did Giovannini summarise the unprecedented institutional attention to architecture on an international level since the late 1970s. The critic also pointed out the significance of actors in the ‘art world’ with regard to a larger public interest in architectural matters. This essay aims to introduce the art market as an important, but hitherto largely ignored, aspect of the historiography of architecture museums, and focuses on the complexities and frictions related to a selected group of sales exhibitions, which proved vital to the formation of a new public image of the architectural profession.
