- Putting the Narrative in the ImageThe Editorial Work of Landscape Architect Jacques Simon
- Abstract
- The debate on the townscape gained interest in France during the 1960s and the 1970s. French landscape architect Jacques Simon played an important role in the debate, mostly because of the strong links he created between his profession as a landscape designer and his activities as the chief editor and owner of the periodical Espace Verts. In this article, we identify the visual and narrative processes that Simon set up, which contributed to building a specific visual rhetoric for the urban landscape. We put these processes in a cultural context that can be associated with a form of counterculture. We then underline the links that can be associated with different contexts, whether from Europe or North America. Looking beyond cultural reality, we emphasize the influence of the current landscape practices on these ‘urban landscape years’, as some conception and communication tools used in landscape architecture still strongly structure the projective practice of contemporary landscape architects.
