- Bernini – Borromini, or the Janus Face of Roman Baroque
- Abstract
- The rivalry between seventeenthcentury architects Bernini and Borromoni is legendary. Maarten Delbeke reconstructs the popular version, and he shows how it corresponds to historical reality. Anecdotes have helped historians to turn Baroque Rome into a play of personalities, and to identify Borromini with an alternative to the papal and solemn city that is traditionally identified with Bernini. In a certain sense, these poles crystallise around the legacy of Michelangelo, but the opposition also shapes the self-images that twentieth-century architects can dispose of.
