- Social Space Under ConstructionUrban Renewal in Broek, Vilvoorde
- Abstract
- The design research in the multi-ethnic neighbourhood of
Broek in Vilvoorde attempts to make the larger waterfront
development more socially inclusive. This neighbourhood was
once very active, but has become invisible. With this research,
Broek claims a place on the list of up-and-coming development
plans. The social space is addressed, with a focus on
parochial and public relational spheres as well as opportunities
for economic integration. To this end, the iterative design
process relies on ethnographic observations and informal
street interviews. The appropriation of a vacant shed as a
community centre ensures more balanced traffic access and
gives a new impulse to neighbourhood activities.
