- Gazing at the Landscape from WithinThe Atlas as a Genre
- Abstract
The article explores in a concise way how, during the last decades, a discourse was developed about landscape in a number of atlases – in particular in the Netherlands and in Belgium. Are atlases instruments that aim to give an objective representation of the landscape or is there something else at stake? In an attempt to grasp the growing complexity of the urbanized landscape and make it comprehensible, it seems as if atlases appeal to a different kind of genre. A genre with storytelling characteristics that are crucial for inscribing the landscape in the public sphere of the contemporary nebular city.
