- Abstract
- Although only a narrow line between two spaces, the threshold is one of the most meaningful elements of architecture. At the threshold worlds come together, while the tensions between both sides become visible and accessible. This is specifically the case concerning the threshold that brings together and separates inside and outside, private and public. The housing complex the Kolenkit, designed by korth tielens architects, is characterised by an emphasis of this edge, this threshold between public and private. The sphere within and around the project is set through the design of the borders between street and home via hedges, gardens and expressive balconies, as well as via the entrance hall and its spatiality and intimacy – borders that become spaces in themselves, as Hans Teerds argues in this article.
