- Abstract
- In her article about Juha Leiviskä’s Myyrmäki Church in Helsinki, Gus Tielens investigates the relationship between the public character of the building and the architectural ambitions of the project. Clearly, the design is influenced by music. Light and rhythm play a paramount role in this project. Juhani Pallasmaa proposed to present this church in this issue of OASE, since it represents a powerful way of building atmosphere. Peter Zumthor places the architectural features of the work in a broader, ‘Nordic’ perspective. The light and rhythmic character of the work is contrary to the heavy, grounded nature of his own work. The essay, in this way, sharpens the approaches of Zumthor en Pallasmaa vis-à-vis their own work and their understanding of atmosphere.
