- Atmoshere as Mindful Physical Presence in Space
- Abstract
- This contribution by German philosopher Gernot Böhme is a shortened version of the chapter ‘Leibliche Anwesenheit im Raum’ from his book Architektur und Atmosphäre (2006). Based on Wölfflin, Schmarsow and Endell, Böhme shows that already in the nineteenth century, art historians showed interest in the physical experience of space. Böhme discusses the concept of sensitivity in relation to physical presence, and argues that atmospheres are central to understand the relationship between spatial characteristics and conscious physical presence in space. He then distinguishes three groups of atmospheres, each which comes with its own ‘generators’ of atmospheres. Böhme concludes by arguing that the attention for atmospheres will open up a new level of creative potential for architecture.
