- Strolling through Time on the Avenida Lenine, Maputo (Mozambique)
- Abstract
- The degree to which the building production of the 1950-1970 period still colours the streetscape in various African cities is illustrated by a photo series on the Avenida Lenine in Maputo, Mozambique, by the young Congolese photographer Sammy Baloji. Through a systematic ‘mapping’ of the streetscape, the diversity of the patrimony becomes clear, but so does the continuing effect of urban structures put in place during the colonial period (in particular the segregation between the ‘white’ and ‘indigenous’ city). This ‘visual essay’ is accompanied by a short explanatory text by Maputo-based architecture historian Luis Lage.
