- French Planning in a Former Belgian ColonyA Critical Analysis of the French Urban Planning Missions in Post-Idependance Kinshasa
- Abstract
- Luce Beeckmans discusses the startling urban planning projects proposed by a team of French planners for the Congolese capital of Kinshasa from 1965 onwards. By deciphering these projects in relation to post-war colonial planning practice and situating them within the ideas in vogue in France at the time, this case study concretely shows how, on the one hand, independence introduced only a relative break with the past in the domain of urban planning in former colonial territories and how, on the other hand, other metropolitan models made their way into Africa via ‘development cooperation’.
