- Colonial Architecture and AmnesiaMapping the Work of Portuguese Architects in Angola and Mozambique
- Abstract
- Madalena Cunha Matos takes a critical look at the specific issues encountered in architectural history research into Portuguese colonial architecture and urban planning. She demonstrates how the history of the struggle for independence of the former Portuguese colonies in Africa, a history with which they have for the most part not yet come to terms, creates a unique context in which research has only been able to develop with difficulty and in a marginalized way. Recently, however, there has been a discernible change. Just as the products of post-war colonial architecture are in danger of disappearing as a result of regeneration in cities like Luanda, this patrimony is slowly being rediscovered.
