- A History of Multiple Modernities:Architecture Culture and Its Conceptions of ‘the Modern’
- Abstract
- Avermaete and Grafe examine the historical trajectory of concepts of modernity and the rhetorical figure of a ‘rupture’ that these tended to share, at least in European history of culture and architecture. The essay reconstructs three distant moments of rhetorical upheaval in the architecture culture of Europe, illustrating how persistent conceptions of modernity were constructed discursively around themes of technology, convention and history – and against very specific cultural and political backgrounds.
