- Practices of Sectioning: Ancient Greek Fragments
- Abstract
- In this paper, a wider understanding is developed of the role that sections play in architectural design. It examines a drawing of the section of a theatre construction, found on the fragment of an ancient Greek vase. Koutsoumpos relates this drawing to the philosophical practice of ‘sectioning’, or ‘cutting’ that was developed during the classical period as a method of categorisation and definition. The paper calls us to rethink the practice of sectioning, from something that is the mere outcome of the design process, to a practice of sectioning as the design thinking that underlies this process. In this way the epistemological foundations through which we can know and understand the world are illuminated.
