- Mechanising Parallel Lines
- Abstract
- The architectural implications of instruments applied to parallel drawing have been largely overlooked. Whereas the history of perspectival representation has often been accompanied by its mechanisation (think, for instance, of Leonardo, Dürer and Scheiner), a similar trajectory cannot be traced for what we now call orthographic projection. By examining a few rare cases of early machines to assist drawing ‘from life’ with parallel lines, this essay traces the potentials of early forms of automation as ways to uncover the often intuitive yet unfamiliar realms of parallel drawing through practices of mechanisation.
